Why Even Working Out a Tiny Bit is Better Than Nothing.
Many people are discouraged from starting a workout routine because they feel like they won’t have the time to commit to it. If you have a really busy schedule you might feel like you will struggle to fit in a workout three or four times per week. However, the truth is that even working out for a very small amount of time is better for you than not working out at all.
The Law of Diminishing Returns
Exercise is subject to the law of diminishing returns in a lot of ways. This means that putting in 20% effort will get you 80% of the results, then achieving the last 20% of results will take another 80% of the effort. Someone who goes from being completely inactive to exercising only 10 minutes per day will see more dramatic results than someone who already exercises an hour per day increasing their time to 2 hours.
So when it comes to working out, it’s important that we let go of this all-or-nothing mentality that stops us from getting started. Even if you only did 15 press ups every day you would start to see a difference in your physique over time, compared to not doing any press ups. It’s better to do a 10-minute workout than no workout at all.
If you are hesitating on getting started on the road to fitness because you are thinking, “If I can’t do it 100%, what’s the point of doing it?” then it’s time to change your mindset. Just get started and commit as much time as you can, even if it’s only doing a 20-minute workout at the gym on your way home from work every day.
Creating Healthy Habits
As long as you do something that is better than nothing and you will be moving in the right direction. Plus, you will always feel better after your workout even if it was a small one and you will not regret making the choice to exercise. You’ll still burn calories and you will put yourself in a healthier and more motivated mindset for the rest of the day.
The hardest part of improving your fitness is getting started. Once you start to do small workouts you will get past that first step. If you can’t do a full workout, just do a short one. If you can’t run for 30 minutes, run for 15. The great thing about this is that humans are creatures of habit and soon your habit of working out, even though it is small, will start to become second nature. One healthy choice will lead to another and you will find yourself wanting to squeeze in more workouts, eat better food and make other small changes in your lifestyle that will have you feeling and looking better.
So why not get to the gym today, even if you only have a short time to spare? It’s better than nothing and you will be glad you did.
