Wearing the right gear for your workout is important – the right gym clothes will ensure that you are comfortable, that you perform at your best and that you conform to the gym’s dress code. However, sometimes gym-goers wear the wrong type of clothing. Here are some of the things that you should avoid wearing at the gym:

All Cotton Shirts

You might think that an old cotton t-shirt is the perfect thing to wear to the gym, but it’s not as good as you might think. Cotton absorbs your sweat and it will not quickly release that sweat through evaporation. As a result, you will end up with heavy and wet cotton against your skin that can cause you to feel chilled. It can also irritate your skin during your workout. It’s much more comfortable to wear more advanced fabrics that will wick moisture away from your body.

Sandals

Even if they are sporty sandals, you should never wear open toe shoes to the gym. First of all, it is more dangerous because you run the risk of stubbing your toe on the equipment or dropping a barbell on your foot. Secondly, sandals will not give you the support that you need for your ankles and legs. Make sure that you are wearing proper sports trainers so that you can avoid injury.

Very Baggy Clothes

Sometimes people wear extremely large clothes to the gym, such as baggy shorts and a long t-shirt. Perhaps you are wearing these clothes because you are self-conscious about your body – but there are a couple of issues with wearing super-baggy clothing. First of all, you won’t be able to see your form very well in the mirror and determine whether or not you are performing the exercises correctly. Also, the excess fabric might get caught in the weight machines – which can be dangerous.

Denim

Working out at the gym in denim is an absolute no-no. It is very heavy and restrictive and it doesn’t breathe or wick sweat away from your skin. If you don’t have any other shorts besides denim cut offs, it’s important to buy some gym shorts before you start your workout. Some gyms will not even allow you to work out if you are wearing denim.

Bare Feet

Going barefoot at the gym is a real workout faux pas and it will likely get you kicked out. It is dangerous, because you could really injure your foot on the weights or the equipment. It is also unsanitary – so make sure that you wear your trainers and socks at all times while you are in the gym.

These are just a few of the things that you should never wear when you are working out at the gym. Instead, wear a pair of trainers, exercise shorts and a t-shirt or tank top made with sweat-wicking fabric – you’ll be both comfortable and appropriate and you will have a much better workout.
