How Long Should Your Workout Last?

When it comes to spending time at the gym – what is the right duration for a workout? Should you spend 30 minutes working out, or should you commit to an hour? Is more time better, or is there an optimum workout time?

Sometimes when it comes to working out, less is more. In order to build muscles and get stronger you will want to hit the gym hard for a shorter period of time rather than spending many hours there. It is recommended that your workout take no more than 60 minutes, which includes warm up time.

When you start to exercise your body will naturally boost your testosterone levels higher than normal and this increased output will peak within your body somewhere around 30 minutes into your workout. After around 45 minutes into your workout, the testosterone levels in your body will start to come back down to the baseline. After around one hour, your body will be producing less testosterone and it will start to produce cortisol, which is a hormone that increases your body fat storage and eats away at your muscle tissue.

Also, when you have a workout that lasts longer than an hour, you will have a much longer recovery time. This is another reason why it makes sense to do as much work as possible within 45 minutes. Of course, this means that you don’t have a lot of time to waste at the gym talking and watching TV – you should always be pushing the pace. Some people spend an hour and a half at the gym, but only 40 minutes or so is spent working out while the rest of the time is spent socialising, looking at their phone, taking mirror selfies and otherwise messing around.

Another advantage to a 45-minute workout time is that you will be able to stay mentally focused and put your everything into each workout. It’s possible to throw everything you have into an incredible training session when you know that you only have 45 minutes ahead of you. You will be able to focus and work hard so that you can have an intense workout. If you are working hard and training at a high intensity level, you should be out of steam after 45 minutes.

This is much more effective than a long low intensity workout. Also, with an efficient 45-minute workout you will find it much easier to fit into your schedule. If you want to squeeze in a workout before or after work, you won’t have to commit as much time.

Of course, the best workout is the one that works for you. Experiment with the duration of your workout until you find something that fits within your schedule, has the right intensity and feels right for you. Going to the gym is all about finding your fitness rhythm and challenging yourself to be better, faster and stronger and reach your goals.
